Mapping global methane emissions from space with deep learning

Google, in collaboration with NASA JPL, launched MAPL-EMIT, a deep learning framework based on EMIT hyperspectral data for automatically detecting and quantifying methane plumes and locating emission sources. The framework uses a Swin-S vision transformer and achieves 84% recall on expert-labeled plumes, trained on 3.6 million synthetic methane plumes.
