When can we say AI made a scientific discovery?

Anthropic announced that its molecular biology lab of 950 Claude agents running for 21 hours produced its first finding: marking previously undocumented repeating patterns around a known enzyme. Some biologists have questioned the claim; Mario Rodríguez Mestre of the University of Copenhagen said his team had already found the pattern, and Anthropic denied learning it from conversations with Claude.
