AI for Long Document Summaries and Q&A: Check for Gaps Before Building a Workflow
Summaries, extraction and question answering each need their own check.

Narrow the request to one output you can check
“Understand this report” is too broad. Choose one task first: pull the key dates from a contract, list the decisions from a meeting, or answer a few questions with page numbers. Define the fields, how missing values are shown and where citations point. When the document has no answer, the model should be allowed to say it was not found.
A long context window only means the file fits
Accepting a very long file does not mean every part is read accurately. Prepare a few checkable questions spread across the beginning, middle and end, plus a few the document cannot answer. Checking for omissions, mismatched numbers and invented citations is more useful than judging how fluent the summary sounds.
Include scan quality in the process
Check text recognition on scanned documents first, and keep the rows and columns of tables intact. A model cannot reliably restore information already lost from its input. Confirm parsing quality on a two-page sample before processing the whole batch. For sensitive documents, confirm your data use rights and the rules of the service you use.
Estimate cost from real usage
The input for a long document is usually far longer than the question itself, and multi-turn Q&A may resend the document every time. Record the tokens and number of calls for one representative document, then estimate with the calculator. If you use caching, adjust for your real hit rate.
